MTS Environmental have developed an integrated management system (IMS) for Coldcarr Recycling Ltd. Coldcarr are a mobile crushing and screening company who produce materials tailored to clients’ operational requirements and material specifications. They specialise in the recovery and manufacture of high-quality recycled aggregates that meet a defined specification. Coldcarr operate with sustainability at their core, without compromising on quality, and their whole business is about closing the recycling loop and helping clients recover as much valuable material from construction as possible. This new IMS allows Coldcarr to operate more efficiently following systems that are specific to their activities and procedures compliant with the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

The IMS has been built to comply with the following ISO standards:

• ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management systems
• ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management systems
• ISO 45001:2018 Occupational health and safety management systems

Formatting the three standards into one management system makes it easy for Coldcarr to navigate instead of having three separate systems.

MTS Environmental produced an IMS Manual for Coldcarr which acts as a route map for all the company operations and procedures. It details how the company complies with the standards and sets out the management systems. MTS Environmental structured the manual based on each content section and subheading of the ISO standards. This makes both the audit and implementation process effortless.

The IMS Manual describes the core elements of the HSEQ IMS and provides direction to procedures within other relevant management systems. A key document is the IMS Register which holds all the information that needs maintaining on a very regular basis as part of the IMS including the training matrix, document register, audit schedule, plant inspections, compliance register, risk register, PPE and first aid register. This will act as the central document for Coldcarr to ensure continued compliance and development within all HSEQ management systems and processes.

During the certification process, MTS Environmental have helped Coldcarr develop their IMS into thirteen principal sections:

11. Signs
12. Practice Diagrams
13. Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work

These are applied to the company and to all staff during induction and toolbox talks. It is ensured that the policies are applied throughout the company by the fact that they feed into specific procedures which are in turn dictated by SSoW and risk assessments. Coldcarr now use documents from these principles to build their Risk Assessment Method Statement (RAMS) document required on each contract.

In August 2022 Coldcarr had their certification audit completed by LRQA and passed with only a few minor observations. MTS Environmental will continue to work with Coldcarr to develop and manage the systems to ensure continuous improvement.
